What “login” means in Ledger Live
Ledger Live does not use an online account model. Instead, access and transaction approvals rely on three complementary layers:
- Ledger device (Nano S Plus, Nano X, Stax) — the private keys remain on the device.
- Device PIN — entered on the hardware wallet to unlock and sign transactions.
- Optional app password or biometric lock — protects the Ledger Live application on your computer or phone.
How to access Ledger Live (Desktop)
- Download Ledger Live only from Ledger.com/Start and install it.
- Open Ledger Live and enter the app password if you enabled it in Settings → Security.
- Connect your Ledger device via USB and unlock it by entering the device PIN.
- Open the corresponding coin app on the device to manage that asset (e.g., Bitcoin app for BTC).
You can view portfolio information without the device if you disabled the app password, but you cannot sign or send transactions without the physical Ledger hardware and its PIN.
How to access Ledger Live (Mobile)
- Install Ledger Live from the official App Store or Google Play (developer: Ledger SAS).
- Unlock the app with your app password, Face ID, or fingerprint (if enabled).
- Pair your Ledger device: Nano X via Bluetooth, Nano S Plus via USB OTG when supported.
- Enter the device PIN on the hardware wallet to approve actions.
App password vs. device PIN — which protects what?
The app password protects the local Ledger Live interface and stored metadata on that device. The device PIN protects the hardware wallet itself and is required to sign transactions. If you forget the app password you can reset the app and reconnect your Ledger device; if you forget the device PIN you must reset the device and restore it from your recovery phrase.
Troubleshooting common login issues
Try a different USB cable/port, avoid USB hubs, ensure Ledger Live is up to date, and restart both your computer and the device.
Reset Ledger Live and reconnect your hardware wallet — your funds are safe because they are controlled by the device and recovery phrase.
Forget the device in your phone's Bluetooth settings and re-pair from inside Ledger Live. Keep devices close and Bluetooth enabled.
Security best practices
- Always download Ledger Live from Ledger.com/Start or official app stores.
- Never share or enter your 24-word recovery phrase into any app, website, or chat — Ledger will never ask for it.
- Verify every address and amount on your Ledger device screen before approving a transaction.
- Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated to receive security fixes and improvements.
- Use app password or device biometric lock on shared systems for extra privacy.
When you lose access to Ledger Live
Losing access to the Ledger Live application does not mean losing your crypto. As long as you have your recovery phrase, you can restore your wallets on a new Ledger device or compatible wallet. If your Ledger device is lost or damaged, obtain a replacement and restore using the 24-word recovery phrase.
Contacting Ledger Support
If problems persist after basic troubleshooting, consult the official Help Center at support.ledger.com or use the in-app help widget. Ledger Support will never ask you for your recovery phrase — if anyone requests it, stop and report the interaction immediately.
